Always Ask for a Delivery Video

Here is the structural problem with ordering a cake from another country: you pay for something you will never see, delivered to someone else, by a person you have never met, and the only evidence it went well is a text message saying it did.

Almost always, it did. But when it does not, there is nothing to discuss — no photo, no record, and a recipient who is too polite to say the icing was sliding off. So you never find out, and neither does the baker.

A thirty-second video at the doorstep fixes this completely.

What a delivery video actually shows

Not a production. A phone, held up for half a minute, capturing:

  • The cake, boxed and intact, before it changes hands
  • The box being opened, so the condition on arrival is on record
  • The message on the cake, readable — this is where spelling mistakes surface
  • The handover itself, and often the recipient's reaction

That last part is the bit nobody expects to care about and everybody ends up keeping. If you have spent eight years of birthdays on a video call, watching your mother open the box in her own doorway is not a delivery confirmation. It is the reason you sent the cake.

What it protects you from

Disputes that cannot otherwise be settled

"It arrived damaged" and "it left here perfect" are both plausible and neither is provable. With a video, the question is answered before it is asked — and in the rare case where a cake genuinely does arrive damaged, you have what you need to ask for it to be put right.

Wrong details, caught while it still matters

Names are misspelled on cakes constantly, especially across Sinhala, Tamil and English transliteration. A video sent at handover means you see it the same day rather than a week later in someone's photos.

Deliveries that quietly did not happen

Rare, but it happens: a cake left with a neighbour, delivered to the wrong lane, or "delivered" a day late. A timestamped video at the correct address ends that entire category of problem.

It protects good bakers more than it protects buyers. Most disputes are honest misunderstandings, and the baker usually has no way to demonstrate they did their job. A video is the cheapest reputation insurance a home baker can carry — which is why the good ones tend to offer it before being asked.

How to ask without it sounding like an accusation

Tone matters. "Send me proof you delivered it" implies you expect to be cheated. Try this instead:

I'm overseas and I'll miss the moment — could you take a short video when you hand it over? I'd love to see her open it.

Framed that way it is not a demand for evidence, it is asking someone to do you a small kindness, and almost everyone says yes. You get the same record either way.

Ask at the point you place the order, not on delivery day — the baker needs to plan for it, and a request that arrives while they are already at the door is easy to forget.

Finding bakers who already do this

Some bakers treat delivery video as standard and say so up front. On CAKELANKA you can filter the directory to only those bakers, and their profiles carry a delivery video you can watch before you order — so you can see the standard of their work and their packaging before committing.

If a baker you otherwise like does not mention it, ask anyway. It is a thirty-second favour, and how someone responds to a small reasonable request tells you a good deal about how they will handle a large one.

One more thing worth requesting

Ask for a photo of the finished cake before it leaves the kitchen, as well. It takes the baker ten seconds, it is your last chance to catch a misspelled name while it can still be fixed, and it gives you something to look at while you wait.
