A distinct baking tradition of its own
Ordering a cake in Jaffna District
Jaffna has a baking culture genuinely different from the rest of the island, with Tamil sweet-making traditions sitting alongside Western-style cakes. Nallur, Chavakachcheri, Point Pedro, Chunnakam, Karainagar and the islands are all served from within the peninsula.
This is also the district where ordering locally is least optional. Jaffna is roughly four hundred kilometres from Colombo — most of a day’s drive — and no finished cake should be attempted over that distance. If the delivery is in the north, the baker needs to be in the north.
Towns covered: Chavakachcheri, Chunnakam, Jaffna, Karainagar, Kopay, Nallur, Point Pedro, Tellippalai, Velanai.
Jaffna cake delivery — common questions
Can a Colombo baker deliver to Jaffna?
In practice, no — it is around 400km and most of a day on the road. A cake will not arrive in the condition it left. Order from a baker in the peninsula.
What makes Jaffna cakes different?
The district has its own sweet-making tradition alongside Western-style baking, so you will find things here that are hard to get elsewhere. Ask the baker what they are known for.
